VP of Product Development

Summary of Position:

Zero Motorcycles is currently looking for a VP of Product Development. The VP of Product Development will have three primary responsibilities: (1) direct management of all four Engineering functions, (2) managing Zero’s Product Development projects, and (3) deliver sound engineering judgment in key engineering operational decisions. This position ensures that the appropriate resources, talent, and budget are in place within Engineering to successfully deliver on its operational commitments, which include new product development and support of existing product. This position is full time and will be working at our Scotts Valley, California headquarters and currently reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manages Zero’s Mechanical, Electrical, Powertrain and Prototype & Testing Engineering Departments.
  • Responsible for managing the departmental creation of approved Engineering budgets, and ensuring that the Directors operate within them. In order to effectively and efficiently deliver on Engineering commitments:
    • Manages Engineering human resourcing, including individual growth plans, to ensure appropriate type, quantity and talent of staff are in place
    • Ensures that solid Engineering tools, systems and processes are in place and maintained, as required
  • Responsible for the creation of Product Development project plans, according to approved content and timelines, including corresponding Test Plans.
  • Responsible for the on-schedule, on-budget and on-scope successful delivery of committed Product Development Projects, requiring effective coordination amongst all departments that champion and participate in Zero’s Product Development Methodology tasks.
    • Ensuring that, in partnership with other relevant functions, every Product Development task activity and its associated timeline is clearly defined, and that the dependencies and interdependencies of and amongst these activities are fully understood
    • Ensuring that the questions that need to be asked / answered to get through each phase exit review are clear to every stakeholder participating in these reviews
  • Demonstrate sound engineering judgment in effective and efficient decision making; methodically leads and mentors staff on problem-solving efforts.
  • Ensure that Engineering effectively and efficiently supports Quality, Production Engineering, Procurement, Assembly and Customer Service; works effectively with these groups to ensure core departmental responsibilities are clearly defined and understood.
  • Ensure thought leadership in Engineering is allowed sufficient bandwidth and resources to continue innovating, in order to ensure growth in Zero’s value and competitive defensibility
  • Communicate effectively and develops strong collaborative relationships with upper management, peers and stakeholders.

Required Education/Experience:
  • Bachelors of Mechanical or Electrical Engineering; Masters in Engineering and/or MBA preferred
  • 10+ years experience in automotive Research & Developmet, with specific emphasis on team and product management
  • Good understanding of motorcycle/auto systems and integration
  • Solid understanding of EV technology
  • Experience with electrical system development, including PCBA’s, embedded systems, firmware/ software, electro mechanical assemblies, wire harnesses, etc.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes and DFM/DFA techniques
  • Experience with effective supply chain communication/relations
  • Experience with process documentation, deployment and management
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Project
  • Experience with computer-aided design and simulation systems and methods

Engineering Fabricator

Summary of Position:

Zero Motorcycles is currently looking for an Engineering Fabricator. This position will be responsible in supporting the engineering department with general fabrication and other support duties. This position is full time and will be working at our Scotts Valley, California headquarters and currently reports to the Director of Prototype and Test.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Fabrication as required by the engineering department, such as prototype motorcycle components, test fixtures, etc.
  • Other support duties as required, such as motorcycle delivery, motorcycle servicing, motorcycle performance evaluation, supply retrieval, etc.
  • Assembles and services motorcycles.
Required Education/Experience:
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have 3+ years of general metal fabrication experience including welding, cutting, machining, sheet metal forming (Be prepared to show work examples, photos are acceptable)
  • Must be competent at CNC programming and setup
  • Must have 2+ years of motorcycle repair and service experience
  • Must have a valid, motorcycle endorsed California driver license with a clean record
  • General Electronics knowledge/skills is a plus

ECN Coordinator

Summary of Position:

Zero Motorcycles is currently looking for an ECN Coordinator. This position will take released engineering change notices from Agile and implement them into our ERP system & across the company pursuant to each disposition. This position is full time M-F and will be working at our Scotts Valley, California headquarters and will report to the Master Planner.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implements approved ECN’s into our ERP system
  • Chase ECN dispositions to completion by working with purchasing, quality, engineering, & materials as needed.
  • Ensure ERP database is maintained and accurate
  • Audits bill of material data for accuracy against our PLM system (Agile)
  • Additional duties such as inventory projects, report writing and overall support to purchasing & materials
Desired:
  • Explores ERP’s capabilities with lot tracking, ECO workbench, effectively dates
  • Explores system upgrades to improve VIN tracking system around ECNs & Das
  • Explores refinements to ECN process, improve clarity of ECNs in process, total cost of completed ECNs, reporting on ECN metrics

Purchasing Engineer/Commodity Manager

Summary of Position:

Zero Motorcycles is currently looking for a purchasing engineer/Commodity Manager. The successful candidate will have a role in product development within a cross-functional product/platform project team. In this role, the individual will be responsible for successful sourcing and integration of supplier components into new vehicles and/or systems. This position will work out of our corporate offices in Scotts Valley, California and reports to the Director of Developmental Purchasing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Quality & Cost – Key resource for developing cost targets for new product vehicles, vehicle systems and components, communicating component part or vehicle system performance information, and managing activities to component level quality and reduce vehicle system costs.
  • Product Development and Program Management – Assist the Director of Developmental Purchasing to plan and execute the launch of new products. Ensure that activity within the purchasing community aligns with the Zero Product Development Methodology. Achieve compliance to the Methodology by managing QCT to targets and planning/tracking of component, development, and capital costs. Explore new sourcing and process ideas and suggestions with purchasing peers and suppliers. Manage transition of components from Developmental Purchasing to Operations Purchasing.
  • Communication - Serve as a liaison between Zero’s Supplier base and internal customers in Mechanical/Electrical/Powertrain Engineering, Industrial Design, Test, Marketing, Manufacturing and Operations Purchasing. Provide regular developmental purchasing status updates on component parts or vehicle systems to the enterprise and leadership.
Required Education/Experience:
  • The position requires a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Electrical Engineer or Mechanical Engineering with experience with transportation related electronics.
  • Demonstrated performance and experience in technical competencies of procurement, engineering, or quality is required. Knowledge of TS16949 or similar quality system and PPAP documentation is required in this position.
  • Fluency in Mandarin is highly desired and ability to travel to Asia on short notice is essential.
Skills and Attributes:
  • The candidate must have the knowledge and hands-on experience in the development, production, and/or procurement of components and/or subsystems, preferably within a TS16949 registered, power sports or motorcycle manufacturing environment.
  • The candidate must have a thorough understanding of how to implementing strategic purchasing relationships with suppliers.

VP of Quality

Summary of Position:

Zero Motorcycles is currently looking for a VP of Quality. The VP of Quality will be responsible for establishing a corporate quality system and team that ensures customer satisfaction and that positively impacts the financial performance of Zero Motorcycles. Champion tools for designing-in and assuring quality, as well as continuous improvement efforts and defect reduction initiatives, both at Zero Motorcycles and at our Suppliers. Establish and maintain an effective Quality Management System (QMS); initiate and implement quality improvement activities as appropriate (e.g., Kaizen, Six Sigma) to raise the performance of the company in terms of the quality, reliability and acceptance of its products, by its customers and distribution partners. This position is full time and will be working at our Scotts Valley, California headquarters and currently reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build on the Quality Management System manual / documentation already developed at Zero, to develop and improve the effectiveness of our quality systems across the company’s operations end to end.
  • Using knowledge of customer concerns and requirements, partner closely with engineering, production and customer service upfront to enable the development/specification of robust design and manufacturing processes in order to deliver world-class products (e.g. implementation and leadership of DFMEA process).
  • Ensure up-front quality is built into both the design and supplier manufacturing process through industry standard practices, such as appropriate dimensioning and tolerancing, key product characteristics, process flow diagrams, process control plans, etc.
  • Specific to firmware, oversee the implementation of regression testing and other quality controls to ensure released code is virtually bug-free
  • Enforce quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and all applicable standards worldwide.
  • Serve as the primary quality assurance resource for problem identification, resolution, reporting and continuous improvement. Perform root-cause analysis and other problem solving activities to identify effective corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Support engineering / development team efforts by participating in design reviews representing quality assurance and the voice of the customer.
  • In collaboration with Engineering and Procurement, lead quality assurance at our suppliers via monitoring of their manufacturing process as spelled out in developed control plans (material certifications, inspection reports, test reports, supplier visits, etc.)
  • Design, implement and document procedures for process control, process improvement, first articles inspection (FAI), incoming parts inspection and final QC inspection.
  • In collaboration with Customer Service, establish and implement a system for collecting, analyzing and reporting on quality issues affecting our owner’s experience with our vehicles. Review the data with the engineering and operations teams and ensure it is actionable to enable them to make sound product design and supplier related decisions.
  • Monitor supplier performance and establish criteria and rating system for critical suppliers. Interface with supplier and customer quality representatives concerning problems with quality control and assure that effective corrective action is implemented.
  • Implement, improve and maintain quality inspection process of incoming materials (according to agreed-upon sample rate, per part number), including First Article Inspection (FAI), Non-Conforming Material (NCM) reports and metrics
  • Manage the process, control, and security of NCM area (Non-Conforming Material)
  • In collaboration with Production Engineering, implement, improve and maintain quality controls in our production line ( control plans, fixtures and equipment for quality assurance, QC inspect of completed bikes, COP audits, Right-First-Time reports, Concerns Per Hundred and Incidents Per Hundred reports, etc.)
  • In collaboration with Customer Service, interact directly with customers, dealers and distributors to identify opportunities to improve quality and provide feedback to manufacturing and engineering personnel.
  • In partnership with the functional heads across the company create an accountable and quality based culture. Educate and train employees as to their impact in the quality management system.
  • Effectively create and support process enhancement initiatives to maintain an environment of continuous improvement throughout the organization. Provide effective leadership support, training and guidance to all company personnel.
Required Education/Experience:
  • BS or BA degree with 10+ years’ experience in a similar organization with at least five of those years in a senior management role.
  • Must have a demonstrable record of implementing and maintaining a total quality system; laying out a strategic plan and overseeing the tactical implementation, driving improved operational and quality metrics. This person will assure that systems are in place and that inter- and intradepartmental communications are such that “things be done only once – the right way.”
  • Successful development and implementation of a quality strategy for a manufacturing operations environment. Successful in implementing consistent standards.

Quality Engineering Electrical Engineer

Summary of Position:

Zero motorcycles is currently looking for a Quality Engineer-Electrical Engineer. The position requires an individual that can apply an EE skill set to diagnosing, documenting root cause, and identifying solutions to electrical issues experienced during the production and testing of electric motorcycles. This individual will work within a team of Quality Engineers, Production Engineers, customer service technicians, and liaise with Development Engineers. This individual will play a key role in ensuring that product that leaves the factory is released under the highest standards and that any problems in the field that require engineering attention are handled quickly and efficiently. This position is full time and reports to the Director of Production and Quality Engineering and will work out of our corporate offices in Scotts Valley, California.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Key member of the Quality Engineering team that will interface with the Production Line, Customer Service Technicians, and Development Engineering
  • Intimately understand all of the electrical systems and test equipment for all models of Zero Motorcycles and develop a diagnostic fault tree and trouble-shooting procedures for diagnosing issues.
  • Train both Production and Customer Service personnel on how to diagnose and remedy issues with the motorcycles and to use the debug systems/test systems
  • Build and maintain test systems such as debug cables, functional test units, manufacturing test units, and logging units
  • Understand and be able to edit embedded code as well as functional tester code
Required Education/Experience:
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering
  • 2-5 Years of professional engineering experience in related field
  • Experience with embedded systems hardware and software
  • Experience with analog and digital circuit design, power electronics is a plus
  • Automotive power train systems or EV systems experience preferred

Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Summary of Position:

Zero Motorcycles is currently seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer owns the design and development of assigned electric motorcycle components, systems, and battery architecture, ensuring Zero Motorcycles has best-in-class mechanical design practices for its products, in order to achieve company objectives. Furthermore, this position has the responsibility to co-lead the optimization of systems and processes used in the design function and to mentor Jr. Engineers as well as effectively communicate Engineering content to other company functions. This position is full time and will be working in our Scotts Valley, California headquarters and will report to the Director of Mechanical Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Has a strong voice in the mechanical architecture direction of Zero motorcycles
  • Identifies unique opportunities for Zero Motorcycles to develop, protect, build and maintain competitive advantage
  • Leads mechanical development of battery systems, configurations, mounting, cooling, interconnect, and environmental durability
  • Sets appropriate mechanical design strategies in the creation of assigned motorcycle components
  • Schedules and leads design reviews at strategic points of a product’s development
