Powertrain Engineer

Summary of Position:

Powertrain Engineer, responsible for assisting with research, design and testing of motors, motor components, motor controllers and their integration into vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research into new technologies to incorporate into our powertrain
  • Develop and conduct tests to ensure new technology meets our quality and performance specifications
  • Analyze data gathered from the field and our test fleet to direct our research focus
  • Work with Operations, Quality and Aftersales departments to identify and resolve powertrain issues
  • Assist with regulatory powertrain testing
  • Assist with building, installing and tuning new powertrains in prototype vehicles
Required Education/Experience:
  • B.S. Engineering with 2 years’ experience in EV powertrain field, or 4 years’ experience developing powertrain components for EV’s.
Skills and Attributes:
  • Ability to work independently
  • Superior problem solving abilities
  • Advanced computer programming knowledge an asset
  • Strong grasp of mechanical concepts
  • Strong grasp of power electronics

VP Sourcing and Procurement

Summary of Position:

As part of the leadership team, the VP Supply Chain will help formulate a rolling three-year strategic plan with measurable milestones for supplier performance and costing. The VP of Sourcing’s primary responsibility is to help communicate and drive these strategies through strategic supplier selection, negotiation, process, metrics, team effectiveness and corporate cadence. The position is based at Zero Motorcycle’s Scotts Valley, California location with moderate international and domestic travel to support strategic supply chain development and supplier meetings.

  • Work with suppliers and internal team to drive improvement to gross margin and quality through Bill of Material pricing, commodity management and vendor measurement and control.
  • Work with Operations and manufacturing to drive measureable improvements to quality and delivery through vendor selection, process improvement and optimization.
  • Identify and select key suppliers to partner with Zero Motorcycles on fast changing and seasonal product line.
  • Drive the establishment of a competitive bidding process to ensure lower part and commodity costs and higher quality across the full supplier base.
  • Lead negotiation with all key suppliers for both the development and production functions as well as other key areas of spend in the business.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Ongoing development and maintenance of a strategic supplier relationships in support of annual product production plans.
  • Scheduling and managing the delivery of components and subassemblies to support the production schedule and the annual sales plan.
  • Drive continuous improvements to create a flexible and efficient supplier base.
  • Work with the VP of Operations to drive the assessment of in-sourcing vs. outsourcing conversations related to components and key parts.
  • Work closely with internal teams to provide leadership for the supply-chain and execution of new product introductions, working with and integrating the needs of Operations, Engineering, Quality and Customer Service.
  • Work to continually improve our suppliers in terms of quality, pricing, availability / on-time delivery, lead-times, communication and long-term planning.
  • Lead negotiations with key partners within the supply-chain to improve COG’s, costs and quality and make improvements in the best interest of Zero Motorcycles’ growth.
  • Work with Finance to coordinate activities to fund operations, maximize investments, drive cost savings and increase efficiency.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and employee engagement.
Required Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (minimum) in Engineering or Science-related discipline; MS and/or MBA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in supply chain management and/or sourcing positions; must show consistent progression through management positions in career.
  • A demonstrated strong track record of supporting new product development through strategic supplier selection.
  • Experience in identifying, selecting, developing, and negotiating with a strategic supply chain.
  • People, project management and strong leadership experience a must.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:
  • Candidate must be able to sit for long periods of time to perform duties, and to move around and make inquiries from other staff, management as needed.
  • Must be able to bend or stoop down to access files, including lifting of items or objects up to 10 lbs.
Other Requirements:
  • M1 (motorcycle license) beneficial, not required.
